Western Russia
Russia was settled from West to East. Its first villages emerged along Western rivers and rooted themselves up and down the natural barrier of the Urals before spilling over into Siberia. To us, Western Russia means the brilliant onion-domed churches and gilded imperial palaces of the old empire as well as Soviet parades in Red Square. But Western Russia also possesses remote monasteries in the arctic north, resort towns on the southern Black Sea, and the humming metropolis of downtown Moscow. It is Russia at its most ancient and most modern.
