Western Russia
Russia was settled from West to East. Its first villages emerged along Western
rivers and rooted themselves up and down the natural barrier of the Urals before
spilling over into Siberia. To us, Western Russia means the brilliant onion-domed
churches and gilded imperial palaces of old empire as well as Soviet parades in
Red Square. But it is also remote monasteries in the arctic north, resort towns
on the southern Black Sea, and the humming metropolis of downtown Moscow. It is
the most ancient and the most modern Russia.
