featuring the highlights of Poland
Uncover the Polish experience in Krakow, its medieval Old Market Square still prospering; massive Gothic Malbork Castle, keep of the Teutonic Knights; Gdansk, a working class city that made history; and Warsaw, Poland’s capital since 1596, with an Old Town entirely rebuilt after WWII.
Days 1-2: Budapest
Explore regal Budapest, the grand Hapsburg capital on the Danube. On the Pest side of the river, visit Heroes Square and the City Park with its Vajdahunyad Castle. Admire the best views of the monumental Parliament building from across the river on Gellert Hill, and discover Castle Hill with St. Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion.
Day 3: Aboard Train
Transfer to Nyugati Station for a champagne reception in the former Royal Waiting Room. The Danube Express will be waiting on the adjoining platform. The train heads north along the Danube towards the Slovak border. Settle in on board before disembarking for a tour of historic Košice.
Day 4: Auschwitz, Krakow
Arrive in Auschwitz and embark on a sobering tour of this place that cast a dark shadow on the 20th century. Next, tour nearby Krakow’s beautifully preserved Old Town, including Wawel Castle, seat of Polish kings for hundreds of years, the medieval Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall and St Mary’s Church.
Day 5: Malbork, Gdansk
After arriving in Malbork, once a stronghold of the Teutonic Knights, tour the medieval brick castle before rejoining the train en route to Gdansk. Historically a free city, Gdansk is the place where the Solidarity movement was born. Enjoy dinner in the city before a final night on board.
Days 6-8: Warsaw
Arrival in Warsaw is journey’s end for the Danube Express. Disembark and check in to a comfortable four star hotel for a two-night stay. Visit the palace of Wilanow, constructed by King Jan Sobieski in the 17th century. On a morning walking tour of the Old Town, admire Castle Square, King Sigmund’s Column, St John’s Cathedral and the Market Square. Enjoy a free afternoon to explore the city further.
