Days 1-8: St. Petersburg & Environs
St. Petersburg was conceived by Peter the Great and fashioned after his favorite European cities. Admire Peter's vision of a cultured capital, fully realized in the superb Russian Museum, the polished columns of St. Isaac's Cathedral, the elegant theaters and the recent proliferation of private art galleries, gourmet restaurants and fine hotels.
Tour the Usupoff Palace with its marble staircase, gilded interior and jewel-box theater.
A visit to the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, with its fabulous collection of art and artifacts, deserves a full day, and includes a private tour of the Gold Room. Explore the Marble Palace, built with more than 32 different types and colors of marble, and the Siege Museum, dedicated to the three terrible years of the Nazi blockade. Admire the dazzling domes of the Church on Spilled Blood and window-shop along sophisticated Nevsky Prospekt.
