"Our MIR tour manager in St. Petersburg was amazing - knowledgeable, accommodating, fun. I don't know what else to say but that we'd go virtually anywhere she was going. We learned so much and had so much fun"

St. Petersburg, home of the czars and their courts, is a rich repository of extravagant palaces, brilliant museums and renowned theaters overflowing with music and dance. Its fashionable boulevards and serene canals glisten in the "White Nights" of summer and dazzle on sunny winter days.
Days 1-8: St. Petersburg & Environs
St. Petersburg was conceived by Peter the Great and fashioned after his favorite European cities. Admire Peter's vision of a cultured capital, fully realized in the superb Russian Museum, the polished columns of St. Isaac's Cathedral, the elegant theaters and the recent proliferation of private art galleries, gourmet restaurants and fine hotels.
Tour the Usupoff Palace with its marble staircase, gilded interior and jewel-box theater.
A visit to the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, with its fabulous collection of art and artifacts, deserves a full day, and includes a private tour of the Gold Room. Hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to Peter's summer home at Peterhof, with its cascades of fountains, its stunning Grand Palace and its more intimate mansions, such as Peter's seaside favorite, Monplaisir.
In Pushkin, once known as Tsarskoe Selo, visit Alexander's Palace, the favorite residence of Nicholas II and Alexandra, and the lavish Catherine's Palace, with its expertly restored Amber Room. Stroll the beautiful park at Pavlovsk, given to Czar Paul I by his mother, Catherine the Great.
Explore the Marble Palace, built with more than 32 different types and colors of marble, and the Siege Museum, dedicated to the three terrible years of the Nazi blockade. Admire the dazzling domes of the Church on Spilled Blood and window-shop along sophisticated Nevsky Prospekt. Enjoy a magical evening at the ballet or opera, a summertime cruise along the city's lovely canals, and a traditional Russian dinner in a private home.
