Days 1-3: UlaanBaatar, Terelj National Park
In UlaanBaatar, capital of Mongolia, visit the National History Museum, the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace, the Gandan Buddhist Monastery and the city's main square. Spend a night in a ger in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, an alpine landscape of grassland and small pines dotted with grazing livestock.
Days 4-5: Aboard train
Return to UlaanBaatar and board a scheduled Trans-Siberian train heading toward Russia.
Days 6-8: Irkutsk, Listvyanka, Lake Baikal
Arrive in Irkutsk and visit a collection of authentic houses and community buildings from the 17th to the early 20th century. Visit the Lake Baikal Museum before taking a boat ride on the oldest and deepest lake in the world. Overnight in a guesthouse in lakeside Listvyanka.
