Days 1-3: Beijing, fly to Lhasa
In Beijing, choose the places that interest you most and tour them with a private guide. Fly to Lhasa for a four-night stay.
Days 4-6: Lhasa
Visit the massive Potala Palace; Sera Monastery, home to about 400 monks; Norbulingka, formerly the summer residence of the Dalai Lamas; and Gandan Monastery, originally built in 1409.
Days 7-8: Train to Xining
Board the train for the journey over 16,600-foot Tangula Pass and down to Xining. Visit the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Ta'er Si and stop at the 600-year-old Donquan Mosque.
Days 9-11: Shanghai
Explore the riverside Bund, the new Shanghai Museum, Moganshan 50, the contemporary art district, and Yu Garden, the "Garden of Leisurely Repose."
